REFLECTED REALITIES: Color Abstract Photographs


Because photography is traditionally thought of as representing reality, making photographs that challenge this assumption is an interesting process: creating structure, order and unity within the picture frame even though the photograph is not about a particular time and place. Much as a painter faces a blank canvas, the starting point for these images is a table. I then add a variety of shapes that I've sculpted from Mylar.  The shapes suggest the "subject matter" and then the colors are added with selectively placed lights and colored gels.  After considering the best perspective from which to photograph the construction, I make the image with a 4” x 5” view camera and color film.  This series explores combining temporary sculpture with photography, and experimenting with how color can influence mood.
